Long Haul Flying Part III: What's in my Flight Bag

So this is the final part of my three part travel series, and for this post I'm covering what I carried in my onboard flight bag! If you've been following the series, you will definitely recognise some of the things listed here, and if you haven't then you can find Part I here, and Part II here, so make sure to check them out! I hope you've all enjoyed reading the series as much as I have enjoyed writing it!

1. Book(s)
I usually take one or two books - this time I took two. Taking two does make your bag a little bit heavier, but it means that if you get bored of reading one, you can switch to the other. It helps keep you focused. I didn't do much reading flying out though, and actually ended up binge reading these on my sunbed!

2. iPad
If you've seen my earlier post on keeping yourself entertained on a flight (check it out here), then you won't be surprised to see I had my iPad with me. I downloaded a few little games to play like Stick Hero (seriously addictive) and Hunters Island which is basically Pokemon! The 90's kid in me absolutely loved this and I ended up playing the game for the majority of both my inbound and outbound flights.

3. Brush and Hair Ties
I like having my hair down as I generally think it looks nicer, but I think like most girls, I get tired of it being on my neck and falling in my face so having these is a necessity! It takes a minute to quickly throw up in a ponytail and it makes such a difference to my comfort levels!

4. Sunglasses
I always pack these whether I will be touching down in the day time, or night time so I can either shield my eyes from the sun, or shield my tired eyes from the world. Sunglasses are an easy way to looking chic when you might not necessarily feel it!

5. Playing Cards
These keep me entertained for hours, with me and Jason usually playing Black Jack or 21. I usually win, which makes playing cards even more enjoyable. Seriously though, the amount of times I got 21 was ridiculous, I should try my luck in a casino!

6. Colouring Book and Pens
I find colouring in really helps my mind to wind down which also happens to make me really tired. I spent much more time colouring in on my flight home, which meant when we landed at 10pm I was super tired and was asleep once my head hit the pillow after getting home!

7. Puzzle Books
These don't take up much room, and are so worth having. I spent a lot of time inbetween flights at the airports doing puzzles. I set myself a target of doing a full book... but got distracted and didn't manage it. I still got a good chunk of the books done though!

8. iPad Charger
Technology is built for on the go these days and most airports and even some planes have charging ports. None of our planes did, but the stop offs at each airport gave me the chance to make sure both my phone and iPad were fully charged ready for each connecting flight.

9. Minimal Makeup Bag
If you've seen my travel post on keeping fresh (check it out here), you'll know that I only take five products on-board a plane to help me freshen up towards the end of the flight which means I save a lot of room and weight!

10. Travel Documents
These are basically the most important thing you need in your bag. I make sure I have documents for my vaccinations as well as the booking details of our flights and hotels and naturally also have my passport with me... otherwise we wouldn't be going anywhere!

I like to keep my bag relatively light, so try to take only what I really need because there has been far too many times where my arm ends up dead from lugging around a tonne of stuff in my hand luggage. Is there anything here you can't be without? What else do you take in yours? Let me know in the comments!

Much love,

  1. Entertainment is essential especially on long haul flights.

Usually I take my 3DS and a couple of books. I used to take vaseline but I've switched to Burts Bees as it's better for your lips.

    Have a good trip!

    1. If I had a 3DS, I would definitely have taken it. I spent so long playing on Arcadians on the iPad, which is basically a free version of pokemon.

  2. Such a great list, Vaseline is a must - my lips always get so dry when flying.

  3. Great post! Most flights I go on are fairly short and I'm normally with friends so I don't have to bring too much with me because our gossiping normally provides us with enough entertainment. But i always make sure to have earphones, a power block for my phone, and a book.

    1. Flying to Thailand was the first time I'd flown long haul in a while, so I'm pleased I remembered how to pack for it. On shorter flights my husband and I are exactly the same - we talk the whole way!

      Thanks for reading lovely!

  4. I always carry books with me or playing cards. But reading a book is always a good idea, time flies and you don't even notice you arrived! :)

    1. I totally agree! Though flying back took an extra two hours due to headwinds and it was honestly the longest two hours of my life, even with my everything I had packed. I think everyone gets restless when they are onboard longer than they expect though.

      Thanks for reading lovely!
