Naked Smokey Palette: First Impressions and Swatches

I got home from work on Friday after a long, looooong day to find out that my wonderful husband had stopped by Debenhams and bought me a little surprise... which just so happened to be Urban Decay's Naked Smokey palette which I have been absolutely lusting after since it was released. It shows how much he listens to me because I have only really mentioned it to him once or twice and he knew exactly which one to get without asking and ruining the surprise! Definite husband points for him. So I thought I would do a first impressions post on it so I could share my excitement with you all, because lets face it this palette is absolutely drop dead gorgeous!

Even in my excitement, the quality of the packaging was super noticeable. This is definitely my favourite palette casing - it feels smooth and quite heavy which screams quality to me. Inside the box there is a little booklet which gives you some advice and direction on creating a few different looks... I always love when companies do this because I used to find it super helpful to have some look inspiration when I first started experimenting with eyeshadows.

First impressions of the shadows was how beautiful they are! There is a great mix of mattes and shimmers which really excited me as I love working with both. A shimmery shadow can take a look from day to night so quickly or just give your eyelook that little bit extra pop. Armor and Smolder were the two I was really excited to swatch as well as whiskey and combust because those two looked like perfect colours for a smokey crease!

Left to right: High, Dirty Sweet, Radar, Armor, Slanted, Dagger, Black Market, Smolder, Password, Whiskey, Combust and last but not least, Thirteen
Dirty Sweet's swatch really stood out - the shimmer in the shadow was just stunning! Armor was equally as beautiful and was really catching the light when I moved my arm around. It has a foil metal look in a way which I just absolutely love. Smolder didn't come out as purple as I was expecting but I actually think I prefer the darker tones of the purple over how I was expecting it to look, so that was a pleasant surprise. As expected Whiskey and Combust are beautiful mattes which I think will likely become staples for me when it comes to creating a smokey crease. Thirteen will be great for a subtle highlight as it is so creamy and light!

I tried it out on Saturday night when I went for a few drinks with my SIL and some friends to celebrate finishing our exams/assignments and I was so impressed! The colours are just honestly beautiful. I will do an updated post in time on how I have gotten on with the palette and will potentially upload a photo tutorial on my favourite eye look to create with it!

Do you guys have this palette? What do you make of it and which shadows do you use to create your favourite eye look?

Much love,

  1. This was next in my queue of products to review but your swatches put me to shame! I've worn mine a thousand times - High and Dirty Sweet are my favorite shadows as I go totally bananas for anything warmtoned. Great review and great swatches.

    1. Aww thank you my lovely! I honestly love seeing reviews from bloggers with well loved palettes. I love getting a picture of how a product fairs over time rather than just of first impressions. I am in love with High and Dirty Sweet, they are the best for a daytime smokey eye!

  3. I thought Smolder was going to be more purple toned too, looks so much more purple in the pan. Love this palette though and the packaging is so good x

    1. Im pleased I wasn't the only one to think that. I actually love that it is more subtle than it looked. Using this basically everyday at the minute. I'm such a creature of habit.

    1. Best advice is to start a pinterest wishlist... its a great way for people to know the sort of stuff you are into when it comes to birthdays and what not and gives them the option to pick something in their budget!
