Lime Crime Velvetine Review: Riot and Bleached

Liquid lipsticks are a cult beauty must have for any makeup lover these days with both high end and drug store brands stocking some variation of them. My first love was 'Wicked' by Lime Crime which was just everywhere on Instagram and I knew after a few months that with or without custom fees I had to buy it.

My 'Wicked' lipstick wasn't long for this world though because being the genius that I am, I managed to lose it on a night out. I was so upset with myself because I used to wear it basically every day so in a way it was probably a blessing in disguise that I lost it and had to change things up. Especially when I look back at photos wearing it and realise that I looked super pale and washed up.

When I finally forgave myself for losing Wicked I decided to buy Riot and Bleached which I planned on using for an ombre lip for my wedding and when they arrived I was absolutely in love. We all know it is always a bit scary buying online because you just have no idea how the product is going to look on your skin, so when I swatched them straight away I was so happy with how the colours looked on my skin. Not many of the amazing beauty gurus I follow on Instagram are porcelain skinned like myself.

Now these Velvetines are pigmented... like seriously pigmented. The colour payoff is just amazing, so much so that I only need to apply one coat for it to be opaque which means you don't need to a whole load of product to get the look you want ladies! The applicator is a doe foot wand which makes it super easy to apply and I never need to use lip liner when I wear these which is always a bonus. The consistency is quite thin, which personally I think makes application even easier but it does mean that it drys really fast so depending on how fast you work with it this can be a pro or a con. For me, this is definitely a bonus as I usually manage to smudge my lipstick before it actually drys.

A huge selling point of Velvetines, and liquid lipsticks in general, is their staying power. Lime Crime claim that you can wear their Velvetines all day without needing to top up and while not everyone agrees with this, I have to say that from my personal experience this has been pretty much true. If I'm out eating or drinking I still habitually check my lipstick is in place, and even though I am a loyal Velvetine wearer I am still sometimes still amazed that it hasn't budged. Now and again I have to top up the inner lip but this has only really been when I've been on a night out and drinking lots - even then I still only really top it up once.

Personally, I absolutely love these lipsticks and they are my go to brand and I always recommend them to my friends and family who always love, love, love them after trying mine. It is super important though that you ladies make an informed choice when buying makeup, particularly when the products are coming from abroad. I ordered these around the time of the Lime Crime scandal when their servers were breached and my details were unfortunately stolen and used. My bank were amazing and got in touch straight away about the suspicious activity and refunded the money taken. Lime Crime sent me a letter to inform me of the breach, but I only received it after I had already dealt with it so it wasn't overly helpful and means that while I rate the Velvetines, I don't rate Lime Crime's customer service and many others agree.

Luckily for Velvetine lovers alike UK website Love Makeup now stock them so there is no need to use Lime Crime's website and you won't be risking any customs charges either. If you guys are interested, you can buy them here for £13.95 which means you aren't paying a markup on the product. You can buy them on Amazon UK as well but they are £26.50 a piece right now so you'd be paying quite a markup. I personally have used Love Makeup and haven't had any issues with them so would definitely recommend you go there to get your hands on these beauties because bad customer service aside, these are hands down the best liquid lipstick I have tried so far.

I am planning on picking up different brands like Anastasia Beverley Hills, Jeffree Star, Gerard Cosmetics and Lip Kit by Kylie so I will keep you guys up to date on whether or not I find a brand that I feel truly rivals the Velvetines formula.

Let me know your favourite brand for liquid lipsticks and whether or not the Lime Crime scandal has put you off from buying by commenting down below. I would love to know your opinions!

Much love,

    1. Sadly they aren't actually stocked in stores in the UK, you have to buy them online. I linked to the website above if you want to check it out, its called Love Makeup (and has some fab products on). They are definitely my go to lipstick right now!

  3. Lime Crime's handling of the scandal completely put me off, which is a shame as I have 6 of their velvetines and was planning on buying newer shades. Now I buy from ABH as well as some smaller, more indie brands for the "stranger" colors, like Makeup Monsters Cosmetics. Both have really good formulas with incredible staying power.

Great post, and I love how honest you were in your review.

    1. I agree that it really wasn't great, such a disappointment really when they have so many loyal customers who keep buying. It is why I don't deal with them directly anymore. I really want to give ABH a try. I've also never heard of Makeup Monsters! I will have to check them out. I have a serious obsession with liquid lipsticks so want to try out as many of the brands as I can!

Thank you! It's super important to me that I'm upfront about products I recommend.

  4. I want to get my hands on some liquid lipsticks as they look so pretty and most importantly I love the formula!! I'm after the Anastasia Beverly Hills ones or even Stila but they don't seem to have much stock whenever I look online in the shades I want :( x

    1. The formula is just to die for and one of the main things that has stopped me from branching out and trying others. I am planning on picking up a few different brands soon - I need to branch out. I don't really like the look of the Stila ones from what I have seen in store, they seem to have a strange smell. It might just be because they are testers though and have been open a while. If I do get a Stila one, it will be Patina when I can finally find it in stock!
